Silane, a colorless gas, reacts with air to produce a potent choking hazard. When exposed to air, it ignites, releasing a dense white smoke of amorphous silica. The most pressing health risk is its spontaneous combustion, capable of causing severe thermal burns, which can be fatal. If a flame or extreme heat touches the silane cylinder before the valve is opened, an explosion is likely. Excessive discharge pressure or speed can lead to a delayed explosion. Uncontrolled leaks, if spontaneous combustion doesn't occur, pose a significant threat and must not be ignored. Personnel handling emergencies require customized protective gear, tailored fire safety measures, and should not attempt to cut off the gas supply before extinguishing the fire.

Silane is a colorless, toxic gas with a flammable nature and an irritating garlic-like odor.

Additional applications include water repellents, masonry protection, graffiti control, depositing polycrystalline silicon layers on silicon wafers in semiconductor manufacturing, and creating sealants. In the late 1990s, the semiconductor industry consumed about 300 metric tons of silane annually. Recently, the burgeoning low-cost solar photovoltaic module manufacturing industry has significantly increased silane consumption, especially for hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) deposition on substrates such as glass, metal, and plastic. The PECVD process, although not resource-efficient with around 85% silane wastage, has sparked recycling initiatives to minimize ecological impact and material waste in a-Si:H solar cells.

Silane is pivotal for supersonic combustion ramjets, initiating combustion in compressed air streams. Capable of burning with carbon dioxide as an oxidizer, it is a promising candidate for Mars-based engine fuels. The reaction's byproducts, silicon dioxide and carbon, limit its application to liquid-fuel rockets using liquid carbon dioxide, ramjets, or other reactive engines.
