Silane is a colorless gas known for its reactive nature with air, potentially resulting in a choking hazard. Upon contact with air, it combusts, emitting a pronounced white amorphous silica smoke. The gas poses significant health risks due to spontaneous combustion, capable of causing severe thermal burns and, if unchecked, can be fatal. If a flame or extreme heat impacts the cylinder before valve operation, an explosion is imminent. Rapid or high-pressure silane discharge can result in a delayed blast. In the absence of spontaneous combustion, silane leaks remain perilous and must not be disregarded. Personnel handling emergencies must be equipped with appropriate protective gear tailored to fire protection. Ensuring the extinguishment of flames is paramount before gas supply cessation.

This silane gas is colorless, toxic, and flammable, possessing a distinctive garlic aroma that can be bothersome.

Other notable uses encompass water repellents, masonry protection, graffiti control, and the application of polycrystalline silicon layers on silicon wafers in semiconductor production. The 1990s saw an annual use of approximately 300 metric tons of silane in the semiconductor sector. Recent growth in affordable solar photovoltaic module production has significantly increased silane consumption for depositing hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) onto glass and various substrates like metal and plastic. Given the PECVD process's material inefficiency, with around 85% silane waste, recycling initiatives have emerged to mitigate waste and lessen the ecological impact of a-Si:H solar cells.

Silane finds application in supersonic combustion ramjets, acting as an initiator for combustion in compressed air streams. Capable of burning with carbon dioxide as an oxidizer, it is a promising fuel candidate for Mars-based engines. However, due to byproducts like silicon dioxide and carbon, its use is limited to liquid-fuel rockets (utilizing liquid carbon dioxide), ramjets, or similar reaction engines.
