The primary health risk involves its spontaneous combustion, which can cause severe thermal burns and may be fatal. Additionally, if high temperatures or flames occur near the silane cylinder valve, explosions could ensue. High or rapid discharge pressure can also lead to delayed explosions. Silane leaks, even if not ignited, pose serious dangers and should not be neglected. Personnel handling emergencies must use appropriate protective equipment tailored for fire scenarios. Extinguish the fire before attempting to shut off the gas supply.

Application
Silane and its functionalized derivatives have diverse industrial and medical applications. They serve as coupling agents, binding fibers such as glass and carbon to polymer matrices, thus fortifying composite materials. For example, silane enhances adhesion by coating glass fibers, which improves the bond with polymer matrices. They also couple a bio-inert layer on titanium implants. Furthermore, silane applications include water repellents, masonry protection, graffiti control, and the application of polycrystalline silicon layers on silicon wafers during semiconductor manufacturing. In the late 1990s, 300 metric tons of silane were used annually by the semiconductor industry. The rise of economical solar photovoltaic module production has amplified silane consumption for depositing hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) on substrates like glass, metal, and plastic. However, PECVD processes are inefficient, wasting about 85% of silane. Efforts in recycling have emerged to minimize waste and environmental impact of a-Si:H-based solar cells.

Silane also finds utility in supersonic combustion ramjets for initiating ignition within compressed air streams. Its ability to burn with carbon dioxide as an oxidizer makes it an innovative candidate for Mars-based engine operations. However, due to solid byproducts such as silicon dioxide and carbon, its use is restricted to liquid-fuel rockets, ramjets, and other reaction engines.
