Silane is a colorless gas that reacts dramatically with air, emitting a potent and choking smoke. Upon contact with air, silane ignites spontaneously, creating a vivid white amorphous silica smoke. The primary health hazard arises from its tendency for sudden combustion, posing risks of severe, potentially life-threatening burns. If flames or intense heat reach any part of the silane cylinder before the valve, there is a serious risk of explosion. Rapid or high-pressure discharge of silane can also induce a delayed yet powerful explosion. Unattended silane leaks without immediate combustion are extremely hazardous and must be addressed at once. Emergency personnel must be equipped with specialized protective gear engineered for fire safety. Never attempt to cut off the gas supply until flames are fully extinguished.

Although the PECVD process is known for low material efficiency, wasting around 85% of silane, ongoing recycling efforts aim to significantly reduce waste and the ecological impact of a-Si:H-based solar cells.
In advanced propulsion systems, silane is pivotal for supersonic combustion ramjets, initiating combustion within the compressed air stream.
